Robin MacKill

Robin MacKill opis an artist based in Chattanooga, TN whose work explores the figure through dramatic lighting. Her work has been included in shows at Townsend Atelier, and the Association for Visual Art's Gallery. Central to her work is the use of light on her models to create mystery and atmosphere, inviting curiosity. Her previous series of portraits captured her daughter as a toddler in quiet moments of observation, her small form illuminated by a bright shaft of light against a still, dark room. MacKillop's most recent series grew out of her interest in testing out unexpected lighting scenarios. When facing a deadline, she set up lighting with multicolored filters and created a series of tiny portraits, each illuminated by stripes of bright color. Finding the idea too compelling to leave behind, she began developing larger compositions including adult figures, showing more of the body and creating expressions with the arms and hands. The ambiguous poses and surroundings feel almost theatrical, though the mystery of who they are and what they are doing is left to the imagination.
